I remember coming bottom of my class in art in my second year in secondary school – I sat next to my best friend, we had a great time and we shared the bottom slot! In third year, my art teacher was a truly inspirational character – Mr Wakefield to his face and ‘Ducky’ when he was out of earshot. He raised everyone’s game, mine included, to the extent that my best friend and I vied for the top slot at the end of the year. I just pipped Nigel to the post with a design in pen and ink. That was the beginning of my love affair with this wonderful, and generally underrated, medium. It has an ability to pick out the multitude of different textures present in nature in a way that few other media can match.
