Alisdair Wiseman : Watercolours
My first adventure in watercolour was a complete disaster! However, I persevered and slowly developed my own style, based in part on the way that I render my pen and ink drawings. Each painting begins as an elaborate pencil drawing, capturing all the intricate detail that I see around me. This acts very much like the steel infrastructure in a modern building around which I build the watercolour. The transparency of watercolour allows the pencil drawing to shine through – my way of trying to tame the medium so that I can pretend that I am still in control. The wild land and seascapes of the Outer Hebrides provide limitless subjects for my work.
